Unlike the classic “Pineapple Beer” which contains neither pineapple nor beer, this “Pineapple Wine” is made from 100% fermented Okinawan pineapples—no sugar added—capturing the pure, vibrant sweetness of the fruit.
Okinawa’s subtropical climate makes it the only region in Japan where pineapples are cultivated. While the rise of imported canned pineapples has reduced local production to just a fraction of its peak, some passionate producers remain. In 1992, “Nago Pineapple Winery” was founded in Nago City, specializing in crafting wines solely from Okinawan pineapples. In 2020, the winery acquired a license to distill and now also offers “Pineapple Brandy” made from their Pineapple Wine.
The featured wine is named “Lagrima Del Sol,” meaning “Tears of the Sun” in Spanish—a poetic match for its golden color. This bottle is one of the sweeter offerings from the winery.
On the nose, there’s gentle, candy-like pineapple aroma reminiscent of pineapple jelly. Medium-bodied, the first sip is refreshingly tart, opening up to juicy pineapple sweetness that lingers through a medium finish. Easy-drinking and crowd-pleasing, it’s perfect for parties or food pairings.
