Can you really add chili to umeshu? Surprisingly, several Japanese producers have launched these “spicy umeshu” creations that sound downright experimental. Out of all the spicy umeshu I’ve tasted—approaching it like a true food adventurer—“Hannya Blade” is hands-down the champion! It’s not only novel and stimulating, but genuinely delicious and addictive. Highly recommended!
On the nose, you’ll pick up a burst of shichimi (Japanese seven-spice) spiciness, with underlying notes of sweet and tart umeshu. At first sip, it’s classic umeshu—sweet and sour. Just as you let your guard down, the flavor transforms, unleashing a fiery heat that starts to warm your belly—seriously spicy! The heat comes on strong but fades quickly, leaving the lingering sweetness and tartness of the umeshu behind. It’s a curious and fun experience.
This umeshu pairs beautifully with Chinese food and red meats, or just as a post-dinner drink with friends. Do note: adding ice will decrease the sweetness but increase the spicy kick, so those with a low spice tolerance should be careful!
You might wonder about the bottle’s dramatic design. The story goes back to “The Tale of Genji.” Prince Genji, famous for his beauty and charm, falls for a stunning woman and enjoys blissful days together. But when the woman discovers Genji’s many other lovers, jealousy consumes her. Eventually, her resentment transforms her into a demon—the “Hannya” mask depicted on the label—who haunts Genji’s lovers.
What’s the link to umeshu? Like life, the experience starts sweet and lovely, but you never know what comes next—just like this sweet-then-spicy umeshu!
Though fiery, the spiciness doesn’t linger excessively on the tongue, so even those who aren’t chili lovers can enjoy its kick. If you love spicy drinks, this is one you can’t miss.
