Honbo Shuzo, located on a high mountain in Nagano Prefecture at the Shinshu Distillery, resumed operations in 2011. Subsequently, its Tsukunokuni Distillery by the southern sea of Kyushu also resumed operations at the end of 2016, and then in 2018, a new whisky kiln was completed in a forest on Yakushima. The nationwide layout over 10 years clearly shows Honbo Shuzo's determination to catch up with Nikka and Suntory, as well as its confidence in the quality of its own whisky.
DURING THE THREE YEARS SINCE THE REVIVAL OF THE TSUKINAMI DISTILLERY, OUR BREWERY HAS BEEN BRINGING BARRELS OF SAKE FROM THE SHINSHU DISTILLERY TO TSUKINAMI AGING. ON ONE HAND, BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL SPIRITS BREWED BY TSUKINAMI DO NOT MEET THE MINIMUM THREE-YEAR AGING STANDARD FOR WHISKEY, AND ON THE OTHER HAND, TO TEST THE CHANGES IN TASTE BROUGHT ABOUT BY TSUKINAMI'S CLIMATE. FOLLOWING THE POSITIVE RECEPTION OF LAST YEAR'S TSUKINAMI AGED 2018, WE ARE NOW TRYING OUT THE 2019 VERSION.
GETTING CLOSER TO SMELL, THERE IS A HINT OF GREEN APPLE AND CITRUS AROMA, LIGHT AND SWEET. THE CREAMINESS ON THE PALATE HAS A STRONG HINT OF RHINE WINE FLAVOR, WITH A TOUCH OF CARAMEL AS AN ACCENT, AND THE DISTINCT CHARACTERISTICS OF A BOURBON BARREL ARE EVIDENT. THE THREE-YEAR AGING PERIOD IS SLIGHTLY SHORT, AND THE FINISH FEELS A BIT ABRUPT, BUT THE BODY IS FULL-BODIED, COUPLED WITH A SLIGHTLY SPICY ALCOHOL STIMULATION, THE OVERALL BALANCE OF THE WINE IS VERY GOOD, WITH A SIMPLE STRUCTURE BUT EXCELLENT QUALITY!
