The creator, Kenniou, is an artisanal joint-venture distillery in Fukuoka formed by the legendary houses "Mii no Kotobuki" and "Niwa no Uguisu." Kenniou is world-famous for its signature "Fully Roasted Barley Shochu," a spirit distilled from heavily roasted barley that naturally exudes rich cacao and toasted notes. To craft "Shinkuro," they mature this unique barley shochu in wooden casks before steeping a curated blend of three distinct specialty coffee beans—Guatemalan Bourbon, Brazilian Mundo Novo, and Colombian Typica—using a patented proprietary method.
The jet-black liquid releases aromas of deep-roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, caramel, and butterscotch. On the palate, the 25% ABV is incredibly well-disguised; the mouthfeel is intensely rich and entirely devoid of sourness, leading to an exceptionally long finish where notes of dark chocolate and roasted nuts linger for minutes. Aside from traditional serves on the rocks or with milk, the distillery suggests a unique summer refresher: mixing 8 parts Shinkuro with 2 parts barley tea to amplify the natural sweetness of roasted grain. It pairs peerlessly with fine cheeses and rich chocolates.
