Gassou is crafted by Miyashita Shuzo in Okayama City. The production process is intricate: the umeshu is first aged separately in both brandy and sherry casks, then blended with their own Triple Cask Single Malt Whisky. The Okayama Triple Cask Whisky has won gold medals at WWA 2020, ISW 2019, and TWSC 2022, earning high praise and commanding a respectable price in the market. By blending this award-winning whisky into their umeshu, Miyashita Shuzo spares no expense. Tasting notes:
Pouring reveals a rich, full-bodied liquid that clings to the glass, releasing the luscious aroma of ripe plums. On the palate, it’s round and robust, with a strong plum presence and moderate sweetness, balanced by a gentle acidity. As it develops, notes of wood emerge, and the flavors of ripe plum and oak blend seamlessly, gliding smoothly across your palate. Despite the 15% ABV, there’s no harsh alcohol bite; the finish is somewhat short, leaving just a touch of lingering oak and making you crave another sip.
