The Mizunara oak cask is often regarded as the secret weapon of Japanese whisky — capable of imparting uniquely Eastern aromas such as sandalwood, incense, and coconut. Yet in whisky, these delicate “Zen-like” notes are often hidden beneath layers of complex flavors, requiring experience and imagination to fully appreciate.

Surprisingly, this umeshu may express the character of Mizunara oak even more clearly than whisky itself.

Crafted by the renowned Saburomaru Distillery of Toyama Prefecture, this exceptional release begins with locally grown Inazumi plums from the Hokuriku region, steeped in Japanese whisky for one full year. The liqueur is then transferred into extremely rare and costly Mizunara oak casks for further maturation, before finally being bottled at a robust 24% ABV.

Due to the scarcity of Mizunara barrels, this release was made available only through selected retailers in Japan, making it a highly limited and collectible bottle.

Influenced heavily by the Mizunara cask, the aroma is unlike ordinary umeshu. Notes of coconut candy, milk powder, and caramel rise beautifully from the glass, while the tart fragrance of green plum quietly lingers in the background.

On the palate, the sweetness is surprisingly restrained. The whisky base reveals its complexity through layers of creamy sweetness, honey, delicate smokiness, and gentle plum acidity. The finish is long, elegant, and refined, leaving behind subtle coconut sweetness alongside lingering fruit notes — truly distinctive and unforgettable.

If you are searching for a classic umeshu bursting with rich plum flavor, this may not be your style.
