Legend has it that a secret coffee-liqueur recipe once circulated among Ginza’s nightclubs. To recreate it, Oita-based Yaoka Shuzo carefully selected Brazilian coffee beans, deeply roasted them, and infused them into the distillery’s own barley shochu. As for the bottle design, it takes inspiration from the gas lamps that once lined Ginza streets during the Meiji era—thus the name “Ginza Gaslight Coffee.”

The style of this liqueur can be summed up in three points: “charcoal-roasted sweetness,” “very low sugar,” and a “strong alcohol presence.” For regular drinkers, enjoying it neat or on the rocks is recommended. For more casual drinkers, the official suggestion is mixing with water at a 1:1 ratio—or adding milk.

Tasted neat, the aroma shows sweet, charcoal-roasted coffee with little alcohol on the nose and a subtle sweetness on the finish. Medium-bodied, the palate begins with roasted notes, followed by bittersweet coffee. The sweetness is close to zero, while the 25% ABV leaves a rich, lingering roasted coffee character across the palate.

At a 1:1 dilution with water, the coffee aroma becomes softer and rounder. After swallowing, gentle sweetness blooms at the back of the throat before fading calmly—making this a relaxing after-dinner drink even for those who don’t usually consume much alcohol, including women who prefer milder drinks.
