Duck rice…? You read it right. This gin is not only inspired by the Portuguese dish Arroz de Pato—it actually uses duck oil in the ingredients. Even reading that is already shocking. Why? And how?
This release belongs to KI NO BI’s “Distillers’ Dreams” series, a platform where the distillers are allowed to experiment boldly with unprecedented ingredients. For this gin, duck oil, saffron, mikan, cardamom and other botanicals were added in an attempt to express “duck rice” through the language of gin. No more words needed—let’s taste it already.
In the glass, the aroma feels classically KI NO BI—yuzu peel, matcha, subtle saffron-like dried floral character, and a touch of pepper. On the palate, the texture is rich and silky, reminiscent of a mouthful of duck-oil rice on an autumn evening. The flavor opens fresh with hints of rice, followed by citrus peel and delicate florals, finishing with juniper spice. Impressive!
At first, the 200ml experimental size seemed a bit much—but after tasting, you might find it too little. And the Distillers’ Dreams series is extremely hard to obtain, so grab it if you can.
Both conceptually and in execution, this release delivers genuine surprise. If you enjoy innovation, adventure, or simply love KI NO BI, this is not to be missed.
