“Ruten” is the third regular expression from Kikka Gin, presented in a fresh green bottle. Besides signature Yamato tachibana orange and angelica, this edition uniquely uses ingredients found only in Nara to bring a clean, verdant character that’s new to Kikka Gin.

Nara, Japan’s ancient capital, is also the birthplace of Japanese forestry. Yoshino in Nara is famous for its top-quality cedar (sugi) and cypress (hinoki) wood, prized by temple builders for centuries. “Ruten” incorporates both Yoshino cedar and cypress into the distillation, symbolizing the endless cycle and transformation of nature.

The aroma opens with Kikka Gin’s signature citrus notes, layered over the clean scent of a forest after rain. The body is rounded and solid, with lingering woody and herbal notes from cedar, cypress, and angelica, balanced by subtle citrus acidity and sweetness. Herbal, dry, and refreshing, “Ruten” is considered Kikka Gin’s “most gin-like” expression yet.

Besides enjoying it neat or as a Gin Tonic, the distillery recommends mixing it with both soda and tonic water (Gin Sonic) to emphasize the crisp, herbal profile while keeping a touch of tonic’s sweetness.
