Does the best New Make necessarily become the best whisky after maturation? Although we often say 70% of a whisky’s character comes from the oak cask, the New Make forms the foundation—its aroma and texture already shape the outline of the final spirit…
Niigata’s young Kameda Distillery won “World’s Best New Make” at the World Whisky Awards 2023 for its “New Pot Peated.” This single-cask bottling is made from that very award-winning New Make, matured for 3 years and 9 months in a selected bourbon cask, bottled at cask strength 58%, limited to only 250 bottles, released exclusively at the Koriyama Whisky Festival in 2025.
Quoting tasting notes from Takashi Kitakaji, president of the well-known Japanese whisky retailer RUDDER:
“On the nose—medicine box, incense, maple, peat, then sweet oak, mint, hops, and freshly cut grass. The palate—beer, citrus peel, limoncello, pine resin, and seaweed. The finish—Earl Grey tea, sage, white pepper, and wood spice, long and comfortable.”
The label artwork is created by artist Tuchihashi San, born in Koriyama and active in Europe, depicting a samurai walking the historic Yashūri-gō mountain pass from Fukushima to Niigata.
