I’m no exception—I took the chance to travel around Wakayama, hoping to discover rare local bottles to share with everyone. When I visited the Fukume Honpo shop in the somewhat famous town of Shirahama, I initially just planned to pick up some umeboshi as souvenirs. But then a staff member offered me a cup of “JUMU” umeshu. The moment I tasted it, I was blown away—this is a top-class, national-level umeshu! Why is it only sold in a small local store like this? No need to overthink it—I knew I had to bring it back and share it with you all!

The color of JUMU umeshu is amber, and when poured into a glass, you can see it lightly coats the sides—evidence of its luscious, slightly rich texture. The aroma is gentle and refined, filling you with a sense of calm and comfort. On the palate, the liquid is silky and smooth, yet retains a pleasant weight. Right away, the vibrant tartness of the plum envelopes a subtle sweetness, with a lingering note of honey swirling in your mouth. It’s so delicious, you’ll find yourself reaching for another sip before you know it—this is the type of umeshu you can accidentally finish half the bottle in one sitting. Pure, high-quality Nanko ume at its best.

There’s no secret technique in making “JUMU”—just the finest ingredients: 100% Wakayama A-grade fully ripe Nanko plums, rock sugar, and shochu, left to mature and develop their delicious flavors with time.
