Launching a craft whisky distillery is risky, given the years required for whisky maturation. Many new distilleries, including Setouchi in Kure City, Hiroshima, also produce gin for immediate sales. Setouchi’s gin has been a standout success, overshadowing its primary business—whisky—until now! Their first New Born release is a true small-batch product, sherry-aged (Oloroso cask) for 1 year and bottled at 47%. Just 600 bottles were released in Japan, selling out quickly. On the nose, it’s initially strong with new make character, then reveals dried fruit, caramel, and chocolate, with a unique citrus peel tang. Surprisingly drinkable for a one-year-old whisky, it hints at an exciting future for Setouchi’s whisky releases.
