"Kir" is a timeless French aperitif found in every bistro and café, traditionally crafted by blending crème de cassis with dry white wine to balance deep berry sweetness with bright acidity. HOCCA WINERY from Yamagata Prefecture presents its unique Japanese interpretation, using its own estate-grown grapes and winemaking expertise.
Upon tasting, the liquid reveals a stunning ruby brilliance. The nose opens with the grapefruit and crisp apple aromas characteristic of Chardonnay, followed by the lush sweetness of blackcurrant. On the palate, it mirrors the elegance of a fine wine—sweet berries glide over the throat, energized by Chardonnay’s acidity, leading to a lingering, succulent finish. With a sweetness profile similar to a balanced Riesling, it is refreshing and impeccably structured.
The story of HOCCA WINERY began as a mission to revitalize abandoned farmlands in Yamagata. The historic sake brewery, Ouhujiman, took over these lands to cultivate grapes, producing wine under the same roof as their sake. Having both categories managed by the same Toji (Master Brewer) is an exceedingly rare feat in Japan. The name "HOCCA" is derived from Hokkamuri, the traditional headscarves worn by local farmers. As a tribute to their labor, every bottle features the iconic red scarf on its label.
