“Impossible. Absolutely impossible!”
When Nishi Shuzo of Kagoshima first attempted to mature sweet potato shochu in oak casks in the early 1990s, the industry reacted with disbelief.
At the time, there was a widely accepted “rule” in Japanese distilling:
Sweet potato is a root vegetable — therefore imo shochu is unsuitable for barrel aging.
But Nishi Shuzo challenged this convention. After years of experimentation and persistence, they released Japan’s very first oak-aged imo shochu in 1997 — “Tenshi no Yuwaku” (Angel’s Temptation).
The rest is history.
Angel’s Temptation went on to sweep major awards and, in 2014, became the first shochu in history to receive an IWSC Gold Award. Demand far exceeded supply, resale prices soared, and it is now widely regarded as a hall-of-fame classic in Japan.
Today, we introduce the extraordinary “Angel’s Temptation Aged 20 Years.”
While the regular expression is aged 10 years, this limited edition was matured for a full 20 years in sherry casks. Over time, nearly half of the spirit was lost to the Angel’s Share, but what remains is nothing short of breathtaking —
a radiant amber hue, profound aromatic depth, a silky and refined texture, and an exceptionally gentle, luscious sweetness.
This release symbolizes Nishi Shuzo’s fearless spirit of innovation —
and is dedicated to those who dare to challenge convention.
Limited to only 1,400 individually numbered bottles worldwide.
A rare masterpiece, offered here at a price significantly below Japanese retail.
