Mizunara Cask, the unique weapon of Japanese whisky, imparts a distinctive sandalwood flavor and agarwood aroma to the spirit, evoking the exotic Zen charm of the East, often making connoisseurs flock to it. However, Mizunara wood is only produced in Japan and is scarce, keeping the raw material prices high. Moreover, its deep grain often leads to severe leakage when made into barrels. For these reasons, very few distilleries choose to use Mizunara barrels for long-term aging, and they are often only used for finishing to add layers to the whisky.
Chichibu's Mizunara Wood Reserve (MWR) is a blend of original cask spirits from the Hanyu and Chichibu distilleries, making it an excellent choice for those who want to experience the full-bodied essence of Mizunara wood.
The sweet fragrance of preserved fruits and the intermittent woody scent... The aroma of MWR first reminds me of Mars's first edition "Fire Barrel" (a wine finished with Virgin Cask, hence with a heavier wood flavor). Comparing the two, one can easily distinguish the sandalwood aroma of MWR from the general oak scent. Behind the sandalwood, there is a backdrop of grassy and coconut aromas, creating a very rich layering of scents.
AFTER ENTERING THE MOUTH, ONE FIRST SENSES A BURST OF SPICINESS, FOLLOWED BY THE EMERGENCE OF HONEY SWEETNESS AND BURSTS OF FRUITY FLAVORS, WHICH ARE THEN OVERSHADOWED BY THE SUBSEQUENTLY ARRIVING WOODY TASTE. THE INFLUENCE OF WATER AND WOOD IS STRONG, MAKING THE OVERALL TASTE SLIGHTLY BITTER. AFTER DRINKING, IT FEELS A BIT LIKE THE SENSATION AFTER EATING A BITTER GRAPEFRUIT, WITH A RATHER SHORT AFTERTASTE.
IF YOU'VE LONG HEARD OF THE REPUTATION OF SHUI YOU MU BUT HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO TRULY TASTE WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT, MWR IN CHICHIBU IS DEFINITELY THE BEST CHOICE FOR AN INTRODUCTION!
