In Russia, tea is traditionally enjoyed with something sweet — cakes, candies, or spoonfuls of fruit jam.
This custom deeply influenced Japanese tea culture, inspiring the creation of the so-called “Russian Tea” in Japan — a strong black tea served with strawberry jam.
The renowned Nakano Shuzo from Oita Prefecture was fascinated by this concept, leading to the creation of this delightful fusion of strawberry and Japanese black tea — a liqueur that perfectly captures the essence of Russian Tea in liquid form.
Unlike conventional black teas grown in India or Sri Lanka, Japan’s own locally cultivated black tea — known as “Wa Koucha” — has become increasingly popular in recent years.
Nakano Shuzo’s hometown, Kitsuki City, is one of Japan’s leading black tea regions, making it the natural choice for this creation.
For the fruit component, they used the premium “Oita Berries” (ベリーツ) strawberries, another local specialty.
The result? A liqueur made entirely from Oita-grown ingredients, combining regional pride with sophisticated flavor balance.
Tasting it neat, the aroma is like fresh strawberry jam with a touch of tea leaf sharpness.
On the palate, the sweetness of strawberries and the tannins of black tea intertwine beautifully — sweet yet refreshing, smooth yet structured.
