The end of an era.
Launched in 2015, Suntory’s first whisky-blended umeshu — Yamazaki Umeshu Whisky Blend — has quietly been discontinued.
While Suntory made no formal announcement, the product has vanished from their official site, and Japanese retailers are now either sold out or raising prices.
Taking its place is a new successor: Yamazaki Umeshu Superior.
Like its predecessor, Superior is matured in whisky casks and blended with grain whisky aged in umeshu barrels.
However, this new edition introduces an additional twist — a touch of brandy and other spirits — resulting in a smoother, more refined profile at 16% ABV, one degree lower than the original.
Tasting neat, the nose shows a slightly tart plum aroma, while the palate is silky and well-balanced between sweetness and acidity — never cloying, never sharp.
A gentle whisky warmth lingers in the finish, complementing rather than overpowering the plum flavor.
Compared with the discontinued Whisky Blend, Superior features less whisky intensity, but offers a richer mouthfeel, brighter plum notes, and lower sweetness — an elegant evolution that appeals to both traditional umeshu fans and whisky lovers alike.
Priced at HK$ 250, or available as a tasting set (Whisky Blend + Superior) for HK$ 500 — the perfect way to experience the transition between two eras of Yamazaki umeshu craftsmanship.
