THE SABURAMA DISTILLERY IN TOYAMA IS ONE OF THE FEW DISTILLERIES IN JAPAN THAT FOCUSES ON PEATED WHISKY. ITS "10-YEAR AKI" BLENDED WHISKY, WHICH BLENDS ITS OWN MALT WHISKY WITH IMPORTED GRAIN WHISKY, RECEIVED QUITE POSITIVE REVIEWS IN THE MARKET AFTER ITS LAUNCH. RECENTLY, IT LAUNCHED ITS LATEST WORK CALLED "SEVEN," WHICH IS BLENDED WITH BASE SPIRITS WITH A MINIMUM AGE OF 7 YEARS AND FEATURES A STRONG PEAT FLAVOR. THE FOLLOWING IS A BRIEF INTRODUCTION.
THE PREVIOUS WORKS OF THE "TEN-YEAR BRIGHT" SERIES WERE ALL BOTTLED AT 40 DEGREES, BUT "SEVEN" IS CHOSEN TO BE BOTTLED AT 46 DEGREES TO HIGHLIGHT THE STRENGTH OF THE WORK. WHEN POURED INTO A GLASS, THE INITIAL SMELL WILL HAVE A STRONG PEAT FLAVOR, FOLLOWED BY THE SWEETNESS OF GRAINS. AFTER A BURST OF HEAT ON THE PALATE, THE FLAVORS OF PEAT AND HEATHER ARE INTERWOVEN. THE AFTERTASTE IS A FEELING OF PEAT AND BURSTS OF CHARRED WOOD, WITH A SLIGHT SALTY SENSATION LINGERING IN THE THROAT, AND A LONG FINISH.
IN IMPRESSION, THIS "SEVEN" IS ONE OF THE HEAVIEST PEATED WORKS AMONG THE REGULAR STYLES OF JAPANESE WHISKY. JUST LIKE ITS PACKAGING, THE OVERALL STYLE IS QUITE STRONG. IF YOU WANT TO TASTE THE JAPANESE HEAVY PEAT STYLE, IT IS DEFINITELY WORTH A TRY.
