Earlier, the Japanese industry established a strict definition for "Japanese Whisky." Since then, only spirits distilled in Japan can be called "Japanese Whisky." However, currently, only three distilleries in Japan—Chita, Miyagikyo, and Fuji Gotemba—have the facilities for large-scale production of grain whisky. Other distilleries, when producing blended whisky, can only use grain whisky imported from abroad and blend it with their own malt whisky. After the new regulations are implemented, apart from the products of these three major distilleries, other distilleries may no longer be able to label their blended creations as "Japanese Whisky"... But there are always exceptions, and the product we are introducing today is one of them!
"Light Green Speckle" is a commemorative work celebrating the 35th anniversary of the completion of the Shinshu Distillery, and thus the composition of the original spirits in the work is particularly meaningful. For the malt original spirit part, it is the first batch of self-distilled original spirits by the Shinshu Distillery after its reopening in 2011. As for the grain original spirit, it was purchased by the Shinshu Distillery from a mysterious Japanese sake brewery (Secret Japanese) in 2011 and has since been aged in Shinshu. Therefore, this work can legitimately call itself "Blended Japanese Whisky." Moreover, "Light Green Speckle" is also the highest-aged whisky since the reopening of the Shinshu Distillery.
"Light Green Speckle" is a type of butterfly active at the Shinshu Distillery. Honpo Shuzo has always liked to package its limited-edition works with butterfly designs, from the "Mitei" with a limited run of 111 bottles launched in 2015 to the single-barrel series "La Papillon". Each butterfly-themed product has been highly sought after. "Light Green Speckle" is Honpo Shuzo's first blended whisky named after a butterfly, which also reflects the distillery's emphasis on it.
ACCORDING TO THE JAPANESE DESCRIPTION, THE AROMA OF THIS WORK IS PARTICULARLY OUTSTANDING, WITH A FRESH AND BALANCED BLEND OF FRUITY, WOODY SCENTS, AND THE SWEETNESS OF GRAINS. THE BODY IS MEDIUM, WITH THE SLIGHT BITTERNESS OF PEAT AND ORANGE PEEL, AND THE EARTHY FLAVOR REMINISCENT OF THE FORESTS AT THE FOOT OF THE JAPANESE ALPS IN SHINSHU.
