Rich yogurt aroma, barely any alcohol bite, and a minimalist yet unforgettable bottle design — this is the signature creation of Japan’s mysterious Bar Yoko.
According to its producer, Tatenokawa Sake Brewery, Bar Yoko is said to be hidden deep within the mountains of Mt. Chōkai. The bar’s address is undisclosed, it rarely opens on weekdays, and even on weekends, entry is by invitation only. Its enigmatic owner, Yoko, the elegant woman on the bottle, is a bold, adventurous mixologist whose creations have become cult favorites — her grapefruit liqueur was a runaway success.
For this project, Yoko carefully sampled yogurts from all across Japan before choosing the luxuriously thick Jersey Yogurt, made from premium Jersey cow’s milk. The yogurt is blended in equal parts (roughly 50:50) with Tatenokawa Daiginjo sake. Upon release, it immediately became a nationwide sensation in Japan.
Pouring into a glass, the milky-white liqueur looks decadent and inviting. The aroma is milky with a subtle yogurt tang. On the palate, it’s creamy and velvety, filling the mouth with rich yogurt flavor balanced by gentle sweetness and mild lactic acidity. The Daiginjo sake base blends seamlessly, creating a beautifully rounded finish. With its ultra-low alcohol presence, this is a must-try for yogurt lovers.
The brewery also recommends enjoying it 1:1 with beer for a unique cream-beer cocktail, or poured over ice cream for a dessert pairing — both surprisingly delicious. Still, even just chilled and neat, it’s incredibly satisfying.
Tatenokawa Sake Brewery, based in Sakata City, Yamagata, is famed for its Kodakara line of fruit and yogurt liqueurs. Its “Bar Yoko” premium series represents a step above — refined, stylish, and now one of Japan’s most sophisticated liqueur lines.
Whether you’re a fan of Bar Yoko or simply seeking a luxurious yogurt-based liqueur, this bottle is sure to impress.
