In 2023, Suntory launched its most prestigious and expensive limited umeshu ever: “Yamazaki Umeshu 5 Years Extra Blend.” Despite its high price, it was a huge success thanks to its outstanding quality. Sensing further opportunity, Suntory decided to revisit the concept, releasing the new “Extra Blend 2024” in the last quarter of 2024—again positioned as their very finest umeshu, but with adjustments to both packaging and flavor profile.

For 2024, the theme is “Ume Fufumu,” representing the image of plum blossoms just about to bloom. The pentagon-shaped outer box is designed with overlapping layers, evoking flower petals. The bottle’s neck is adorned with a “ume musubi,” a plum blossom-shaped knot symbolizing good fortune—beautifully crafted and refined.

As for the liquid itself, this year’s edition is based on brandy, in which the plums are initially macerated. The liquid is then transferred to whisky casks for aging, and finally blended with malt whisky and high-aged brandy that have themselves been matured in umeshu barrels. This already rich umeshu gains even greater depth and complexity through this elaborate process.

According to official tasting notes, the aroma is luxurious and exuberant. The plum character is prominent, with a delicate and mellow mouthfeel unique to long-aged umeshu. The finish is deep, lingering, and exudes a true sense of luxury.
