Cherry Cola — one of the world’s most divisive drinks.
In the U.S., it’s a cult favorite — sales rise every year, and even Warren Buffett famously drinks it daily.
In Hong Kong, most find it overly sweet and artificial.
And in Japan? Coca-Cola has tried — and failed — multiple times to launch its cherry variant.
The Japanese palate simply wasn’t convinced... until now.
From Kumamoto, Fukano Distillery set out to reinvent the cherry cola experience.
Their creation, “Karaku Cherry” (with karaku meaning “cola” in Japanese), blends natural handmade cola syrup — made from ginger, spices, lemon juice, and cane sugar — with fresh cherry juice and authentic rice shochu, to create a cherry cola liqueur designed for the Japanese (and Asian) taste.
At 14% ABV, this drink is concentrated, so the distillery recommends mixing 1 part liqueur to 3 parts soda water for the perfect serve.
Tasting it neat, the first impression is… clarity.
It tastes like cola — but deconstructed.
Whereas typical cola just tastes like “cola,” here you can distinguish each component — cinnamon, ginger, cherry, star anise — revealing the elegant roots of cola’s original spice blend.
The palate is smooth and moderately sweet, with mild fizz and a warming spice finish reminiscent of mulled wine, yet unmistakably cola. It’s clever, nostalgic, and utterly drinkable — a world apart from commercial Cherry Coke.
If you love cola — or are looking for a fun, crowd-pleasing mixer for parties — Karaku Cherry will be your new favorite discovery.
